About us

Hana Flutes is a flute studio founded by flute technician Cristian Sanmartin in collaboration with renowned wind instrument technician Enrique Pernia from Luthierdeviento S.L.

It is this researcher side of his background that defines the mission of Hana Flutes: to keep learning passionately about the flute. Our philosophy is to look at what we know about the flute from every posible angle in order to gain a complete, multifaceted understanding of the instrument.

We are dealers of pre-owned flutes, providing instrument sale and purchase services. As a workshop, we provide consultation and repair services.

Cristian Sanmartin is, in addition, a profesional flutist and flute researcher.

Following an in-depth examination of the instrument and its specific needs, every step is taken to achieve a setup that provides the best possible acoustic response, as well as optimal aesthetic appearance. All the pads and wear and tear parts are replaced.

Overhaul

The process consists of the following stages

  • Disassembly

    Disassembly

    1. Drafting a plan of action. Variable parameters (materials, type of pad, key height, tuning adjustments/response, spring tension, etc) and additional works (if required) are agreed upon with the owner of the instrument.
    2. Disassembly and disposal of wear and tear parts: pads, corks, head cork, felt. The trill key and D # key corks will not be disposed of if they are still in good condition.
    3. Correction of mechanical issues: loose hinges, misalignment between posts, axle problems, leveling of tone holes, spring replacement (if needed), etc
    4. Complete disassembly.
  • Cleaning

    Cleaning

    1. Cleaning of all axles and screws.
    2. Soap cleaning of the tubes. Drying.
    3. Chemical cleaning of the tubes. Drying.
    4. Ultrafine polish of the tubes by hand.
    5. Soap cleaning of the mechanism. Drying.
    6. Ultrasonic cleaning of the mechanism. Drying.
    7. Chemical cleaning of the mechanism. Drying.
    8. Ultrafine polish of the mechanism by hand.
  • Reassembly

    Reassembly

    1. Assembly of new headjoint stopper. Cleaning and ultrafine polish of the stopper face.
    2. Assembly of the flute mechanism and greasing. Pins are replaced if needed.
    3. Pad assembly, with all the adjustments and elements needed to achieve a leak-free fit of the tone holes.
    4. Placement of felt, cork, paper and other damping and regulating elements.
    5. Fine adjustment of the entire mechanism.
    6. Adjustment adaptation period. Trial use of the instrument alternated with readjustments (if needed) until the adjustment is deemed stable. Minimum 3 days.
    7. Final cleaning and exterior greasing (joints).

REFURBISHED INSTRUMENTS

All our instruments available for sale have been personally selected by Cristian Sanmartin. We offer a trial period of 15 days and a two-years double warranty by Hana Flutes and Luthierdeviento S.L, covering the quality, abscence of defects, and rectification of any malfunction resulting from use.
